How to make children enjoy wearing eye pads: 5 tips

Convincing little patients of wearing eye pads on an everyday basis is not easy. Here we share some tips to get them motivated.

Children need to wear an eye pad if the eyesight on one eye is substantially worse than on the other eye. Often, the weaker eye tends to squint (strabismus). To train the weak eye, the strong eye is covered with an eye pad. Gradually, the weak eye becomes stronger and the vision improves. However, an eye pad always catches attention which is why children do not necessarily enjoy wearing one in public. Despite the proven and convincing results, parents often struggle to convince their child of wearing the eye pad. But with a few tricks, it is possible to get the little patients motivated.

Choosing an eye pad

There is a broad selection of eye pads available on the market. To begin with, the various offers should be tested in order to find the perfect fit. You can also choose between different colors. There are very discreet ones in a skin-like color as well as patterned, colorful ones. For children, the look of a pad is an important criterion because they perceive wearing an eye pad as something uncommon. Furthermore, it is important to look for high quality. Skin-friendly options are available for sensitive skin. The adhesive used should be skin-friendly formulated as well and guarantee for a tight fit. At the same time, the eye pad must not itch or tweak and it should be removeable without any pain. On prescription, the costs are usually covered completely by the health insurance company.

How to get children enthusiastic about wearing eye pads

  1. First and foremost, the importance of wearing an eye pad should be explained to the little patient in a simple, easy-to-understand language. Should the child have any questions, these should be answered as well. Even if the child’s questions or concerns appear exaggerated or irrelevant to the adult, they still should be answered in a calm and objective manner. This way, the child feels taken seriously and realizes that wearing the eye pad is going to be beneficial.
  2. If the child goes to school or kindergarten, teachers should be informed about the eye pad. This way, children can be taught that wearing an eye pad is perfectly normal.
  3. For children, the look of the eye pad is of special importance. There is a broad selection of all kinds of colors and patterns. The children should be free to choose their favorite that they feel comfortable with.
  4. Another trick is applying an eye pad to the child’s favorite stuffed animal as well. Often, children have a strong emotional bond to their favorite stuffed animal. If their cuddly toy wears the same “accessory”, children tend to feel more comfortable with their own eye pad.
  5. It could also prove helpful to draw an eye pad on a popular children’s character or comic figure. This is particularly effective if the character is a role model as well. In a playful way, wearing an eye pad can be perceived as a “cool” thing.

It is of particular importance to make sure that the child feels comfortable wearing an eye pad. Hence, the look and wearing comfort play a crucial role.
