The use of heat and cold is a simple and effective therapeutic measure in the treatment of pain.
Heat increases body temperature, thereby increasing circulation which increases tissue metabolism. It acts as a muscle relaxant and decreases spasms, improving mobility of connective tissue and joints. Cold alleviates pain by decreasing the conduction of nerves, inhibiting pain receptor activity. Cooling reduces the extent of swelling and bruising if applied soon after the injury occurs.
